Tips on giving a beginner a riding lesson?
My friend is coming over to my house this weekend and wants to ride my horse and she wasnts me to give her a lesson type thing i suppose. She just went to horse camp for 5 days but as far as i know that is really the only riding experience she has ever had. During the horse camp you basically just went on trails all day in a western saddle. I only have and english saddle and i have underused my trails and unfortunately weeds and who knows what else has grown over them. So basically it will be something she isn’t used to.
My horse is completely safe- she used to be a lesson horse – im just not really sure how to go about giving her a lesson.
What can i do? any lunge, walking, trotting, ground poll exercises? would that be too much? i dunno im so lost and she is so excited.
i give lessons to a friend, she has never even touched a horse let alone ride haha,
But what i do is:
Lessons 1:
Just get her on lunge, Get her in the right position, then get her to walk on, Only little bit and tell her to make horse stop. Do this a few times then, just get her of the lunge and ger her to do bit of walking around when she can conrtol and stop, get her back on the lunge and get her to stand up in saddle while walking to get her use to putting heels down, toes up!
then get her to trot, tell her when to rise, 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 so on… Thenn once hse can do this take her over poles and get her to take one hand of but keep on lunge till she feel right.

Tell your friend to gain confidence and trust within herself. Trusting you also by teaching her is a big key to to that.

Ok so I give lesson type things to my cousins who are begginers. My pony is usually good when he knows a begginer is on his back. What I do is walk around with them first showing them how to sit and stuff. Then I might get them to do things like standing in their stirrups, jumping position etc. then i would lead them doing a trot but just for a few strides and then back to walk for a min and trot a few strides agian and so on becuase they will lose their balance if i keep trotting. Poles are also a good idea and so is lunge. Really it depends on how much she has done that you can do with her.

When I was a beginner my friend used to give me lessons. The type of stuff she got me to do was – walking in circles (changing directions), Trotting in circles (also changing directions). I did this in a roundyard. As i found my rhythm in my trotting and more control and confidence over more horse, I would go out into a bigger, more open area (like maybe a paddock or just a riding flat and do some figure 8’s. Also walking over polls and also trotting over them too. This was really good for me, just doing this basic stuff, as i was still learning. It really helped me feel more confident!
