Coggins is NOT a disease, it’s a TEST for a diease called EIA (Equine Infectious Anemia). Some horses get EIA and die very quickly while others become carriers who show no symptoms but can still give it to others. These carriers are the reason all horses must be tested yearly and no horse can travel without a current negative Coggins paper (in the US). Coggins, by the way, is the last name of the man who developed the test.
