Would you consider buying a horse in a different state?
There are no horses in my price range and trained in my discipline currently for sale in my state. I’ve done searches and there are a lot of nice looking horses in other states though…so should I consider buying a horse that’s out of state (and driving out to test it) or is that too much of a hassle and I should just wait until the right horse is for sale in my state?
I’d go for it! There’s pros and cons for both. If you decide to look at a horse from a different state, that means that you’ll most likely have to drive a bit to check that horse out. And if you wait around, you could be waiting for a while! Whatever you do and no matter how far you have to drive to see a horse, make sure you check him/her out thoroughly. I like to check my horses out at least twice, but I understand if that would be a lot of hassle. It also depends on what type of horse you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a horse to train and/or to just be a companion, than you could probably get by with just a thorough "interview" and test run of the horse. If you’re looking for a new show horse than I’d recommend thinking about checking him/her out more than once just because show life can be demanding these days-lol and if the horse is more on the pricier side. Either way, you’ll find that horse! Hope this helps!

Absolutely go for it, but first make sure you have a vet set up to do your pre-purchase exam in the other state and make sure you bring someone really knowledgeable (like your trainer) with you to check things out. Good luck!

Definitely, if it is worth it to you to make the trip out to test him. I live in PA and bought a horse from NJ, no big deal. If you don’t have a trailer, you’ll have to pay more for shipping, and you’ll want a reference for a vet over there to vet check the horse if you want that done. You will also need a current coggins and possibly a health certificate to transport the horse across state lines, but if you can make all the arrangements, there is no good reason not to buy the right horse, even if he’s in a different state.

I would buy a horse out of state, but my mom just won’t drive me. Really, all you have to do is try it out once, or maybe again the next day to make SURE you like it, then fly/drive back, and set up a vet to go look at it… And trailering of course.

I think it’s worth it. We bought a mare out of state several years ago. She really wasn’t anything fancy, but she was a good match for my 10 year old sister. The mare was green broke, but man was she amazing. She still is! We drove out to see her, and we drove out a second time to pick her up.

Yes, but you do have to be careful if you know somwone who is selling a horse out in that state then that is even better. You need to check for some things like if a horse is drugged ect. to figure out that problem then ask to practice with him for a week. (I am sure you know that, but if you are traveling far you want to make sure you are getting what you want). But I would do that

Why wouldn’t you if you think some horse in another state could be the right horse? My last horse was from a neighbor state. And I always look in surrounding states when searching for horses.

The only way I would buy a horse out of state is if its a REALLY good deal and if its one of the surrounding states.

I never hesitate to look at horses in other states. I never search by state. Think about the maximum time and money you want to spend on the road, then do a milage search. I look for horses within 500 miles of where I live, and in wyoming.
