The breed of the horse is much less important than it’s tempermant.
I would be looking for a horse that was advertised as safe for a beginner or one that had tons of trail experience and time on trails.
While no horse is truely "bombproof" you need to ride a few and see how well you get [...]

I would definately advise it. If only for the fact that, the more you know the more you’ll be able to do and the more fun you’ll have.
Remember even the most well trained horse needs some guidance on occassion and it does help if the rider knows at least the basics.
