How old is too old? What is a good age to buy a horse?

I would look at atleast 6 years old. The highest age, maybe 17 or 18. Every horse is different. Some may be broken and calm at four, while others might be spirited. It all depends on the horse. Since it’s your first horse you should make sure the horse is beginner friendly and has a temperament under 3. Don’t get anything too young like 2 or three because you will have to break it in yourself and that is extremely hard. When buying a horse always ask if you can try out the horse for atleast two weeks before you buy it. This basically means you take it home or to the barn you board at and see how he does. Does he seem spooked even after two weeks? Does he not ride like you want? These are all things to consider. Some owners who are selling the horse will drug it so it seems calm, but isn’t really. I’ve had this happen to me and now we have a spirited horse that we should have taken home first before buying. Also, get a vet check and check for any illnesses. You don’t want a lame horse on your hands or one that is sick. Hope I helped!

Hi I am having problems with a horse I sold. They are late on payments by a month and will not email or call me back. What should I do? The last email I got said she was thinking of moving and couldn’t take him if she did move she asked if I wanted him back and I told her to go ahead bring him back weeks ago and I have not heard a thing nor gotten money for some time…. I am getting worried.

Holly, I suggest that you go see the buyer. It may be that she has already moved. The attitude that I see in what you relate is typical of someone who is going to try to stick you on the loan.

If you can recover the horse, do so. I hope that you have a note in writing on the debt. You may have to go to court over this. Try to find out where she moved if you can.

Good luck,
Dan

Planning on buying a horse from Nebraska and bring it to Colorado. I know brand inspections are required in Colorado, but not in Nebraska. What papers and procedures do I need to have a go through in order for the paperwork to say I am the legal owner? Do I just need to have the BI done in Nebraska? I I know I probably need health certificate and coggins test. Thanks. Any info or personal experience would help.

Here is the Colorado State Veterinarians website
http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite/Agriculture-Main/CDAG/1183672504470
It gives you the information you need to bring any animal in to the state.

For horses from Nebraska they require a CVI (health certificate), the EHV-1 permit, and a coggins test. You can call their office at (303) 239-4161 Monday through Friday 8am-5pm (MST to obtain the EHV-1 permit.

A bill of sale will transfer ownership – if it is a registered horse you will change ownership with the breed registry also.

Can someone give me a list of questions you should ask when buying a horse like what type of food is he eating daily?

1. What training does he have, and who has done it? (Ie, he had 30 days of basic training with _____, then 60 days of Western Pleasure training with ________)

2. Is he beginner/kid friendly? If it’s a show horse, can a youth or amateur show him successfully or does he need a professional to work at his potential? Does he tolerate beginner mistakes?

3. Is he easily maintained (training-wise) at home by a kid and/or amateur adult, or does he need to stay in training in order to perform his best?

4. Has he ever had any soundness or health issues? Who is his vet? If he has had an issue, what was it, how did it heal, and does it have a lasting effect on him? (All of that can be confirmed/checked by the vet)

5. Is he currently shod? Has he always been shod/does he need to be, or is he sound barefoot?

6. Is he an easy keeper or hard to maintain (physically)? Ie, does he require special supplements or feed or have a hard time keeping weight on, or does he look at a blade of grass and get fat?

7. What type of turnout does he currently get? Is he usually alone or with other horses, and how does he act in either situation? (This is important–we bought a mare who had never been turned out, and she spooked, bolted, and flipped over a fence within six weeks of being home, where she was turned out occasionally, and it means she’s going to be on medication/supplements to stay sound for the rest of her life and will never pass a vet check).

8. Is he stalled at all? Does he do okay when stalled or does he develop bad habits or have too much energy?

9. What bad habits does he have? Weaving, pawing, biting, cribbing, etc.

10. When he spooks, what is his natural reaction? Does he stop and stare or turn and bolt?

11. If a rider irritates him (ie, lands hard on his back, jabs him accidentally, etc.) what is his reaction? Does he erupt into a bucking fit and take off or does he just keep going?

12. What is the furthest he’s gone in the discipline you want? (Ie, how high has he jumped, how fast has he run barrels, how big of a show has he placed in, etc.)

13. Has he ever been hauled? How does he do in the trailer?

14. How does he handle new places? Does he require a lot of lunging/riding down or is he calm from the second he steps off the trailer?

15. Has he ever shown? If so, where/what type of shows? How well did he do? Who showed him? If he’s done breed circuit, you can look it up. With smaller open shows you just have to go by what the owner said. Not sure about bigger h/j, dressage, etc. shows, but if he’s done well, you should be able to check year end standings and that sort of thing.

16. What disciplines/events has he ever tried/competed in/been trained in, and how did he do? Is there any reason to believe he won’t be suitable for (whatever discipline you might want to try)?

When you go ride a horse, try him in whatever area you plan to use him. If you want a jumper and they say he jumps, then jump him. If you want a trail safe horse and they say he is, go on a trail ride. If they refuse to let you try it, stay away (they may be willing to take a partial deposit on him and let you take him on trial before you pay in full). Get a vet check. If he’s registered, look at his papers. If you’re buying a horse with "potential" but who isn’t proven, take someone along who can also look at his conformation and movement and help you decide if it’s worth the risk. If he’s shown, ask people around the shows if they know the horse. If he’s been with a trainer before, call the trainer and ask about him.

Just wondering (: free points. Products like a saddle, leg protection, sheet’s, sleazy, brushes, etc. (:
I bought a saddle off of ebay once. (took a HUGE chance) it turned out to be really nice! good quality and everything. And it fits my horse nice! I still have it to this day.

I’ve always liked looking around for products on ebay.
you can usually score some awesome deals on almost all new stuff, and every equestrian knows that the cheaper you can get quality things the better.
Saddles:
Be cautious, try to get as many pictures as possible, and make sure to ask if the saddle has taken any tumbles, which could cause the tree to break. Check the stitching, this will indicate whether the saddle is falling apart (literally) at the seams. Be conscious of your horses tree size as well as your own saddle size to find the perfect fit.
Leg Protection:
Check for cleanliness, as well as stitching. If showing english, look for leather, but make good decisions when choosing the boots and try and find the ones with the fewest wear.
Sheets/Sleazy:
Check for sizes. Make sure all clips are present, and make sure there are no rips. Check for dust and stubborn stains.
Brushes:
I’d rather just buy new. BUT, if you must, make sure they look somewhat clean. If you can see the last horses hairs on the bristles, probably don’t want to buy them. Make sure all bristles are present, and they show no signs of hurtful splinters in the wood!

I would just take precaution when buying these products, because of the recent outbreak of EHV-1. The disease can be transmitted through any shared horse products, brushes, saddles, and sheets are excellent breeding grounds for these bugs.
Although the chances are very slim that the products are all contaminated, and the number of cases of EHV-1 are dwindling down, it’s always to better safe than sorry.

thanks in advance!

You only get "papers" if the horse is registered with a breed association, (not all are) otherwise any handwritten bill of sale is sufficient legally. Your county or town could care less.

If you are traveling over state lines, you need a negative Coggins paper and a health certificate from a vet. If you are staying within a state, I would personally still want a negative Coggins, but it is not required by any regulatory agency.

I’m considering buying a filly. She is half-Arabian and half-Paint. I’m experienced with Paint horses but am interested in a horse with a closer, one-on-one bond rather than the "anybody, anything, anywhere" Paint temperment. The filly is calmer than her breeders expected her to be so I don’t have to worry about her being to "hot" for me, but I am wondering about how half-Arabians (or Arabians in general) bond differently than a Paint horses.

Also, what are the pros and cons in general of the Arabian temperment?

Pros: Good stamina, especially since she is crossed with Paint. Fast
Cons: The Arab in them usually makes them fairly flighty and they tend to think with the ‘reactive’ side of their brain. I’ve met Arabs that were very clingy and spooky, and I’ve met ones that are aloof and want nothing to do with the people who work with them. It really depends on what kind of personality the Arab and the Paint had.

In theory, the Paint should make her more level headed and more reasonable (Most Paints I’ve met are fairly nonreactive. Mine is kinda reactive, but he is also bred to be a cutting horse, so he is a little bit more high-strung than some others might be). The Arab in her should also make her even faster, but it can also make her too close to you and make her rely on you too much.
My biggest thing with a Paint/Arab cross would be the conformation. You are crossing this tiny chested, lean, fairly light horse with a- if of good quality- large boned Paint with a big chest, big butt, and just overall a big horse. This combination could either turn out to be a perfect middle, or it could end with a really awkward looking horse when it gets bigger because of how different the parents were.

The horse is a 10 yr old large welsh pony gelding.
I was told that he has won many hunter competitions over the past 5 yrs. I found some of those records on the internet. I am going to have a prepurchase exam done. The owner of the barn where I take lessons is recommending the horse to me based on how well trained it is, it’s "value" as a show horse, and it’s kind, gentle manor. Can I trust the owner of the barn?

A good show horse that is basically automatic pilot can run up over $20,000 but I would want to see paperwork first to justify paying that much. Is it actually breed registered? Do you know if the owner of the barn is getting a commission on the sale for bringing a buyer to the vendor? I would seriously question why the barn owner is so keen for you to part with that much cash. Have you viewed any other prospects? If the barn owner is going to make money off this deal (and remember she might not be telling you but she can make up to 10%), I would find a neutral party that has your best interests at heart and shop around a bit with them helping you. I could find you something of equal quality for half that with a proven record and with a few less years on it so I know that they are out there. Please tread carefully and don’t leap into anything. It’s doubtful that someone will walk into the barn and drop $33k this week so you have some time to consider and look around.
