im only young but i know that riding can crunch your back up not-so-late in life. i dont think i brace my back when sitting trot, i try to keep a swinging hip and no longer tense my back in half-halts. i still occasionally feel my back ‘tweak’ when im on the ground, this can only get worse as i age i suppose

The main cause is as you said because of tense backs. Be sure to always have a very relaxed back, focus on it for a while and if you pay attention to it for a while eventually it will be natural. There are also certain things you can buy to help you have the correct position to ensure that your back is nice and relaxed.

Lower back (lumbar) exercises might help you for strengthening your back…have you had your lower back evaluated by a physician? You might consider that..

I am one of those "not so young" people and have back problems, but actually the only time I never feel achy in my back is when I am riding. If you are feeling your back while riding try sitting a little bit more "on your pockets" You should feel your seat bones. By sitting more forward you may be putting an arch in your back that is causing your achy feeling.

Sit on your pockets and let your back swing (just like your horse’s back)

    Good luck and good riding

You are probley stiffening your back more than you realize. Try to post more often. You may consider getting weekly massage and accupuncture like I do. might want to take some joint supplements. Talk to your trainer.

my back does that to. It may not be tense muscles, but if you’re trying something different and harder it could just be sore and stiff. it could also come from your matress and not your riding.
