I always had good luck with drawing the test. Draw a dressage arena with all the letters marked, then use your pen to draw in the test. Somehow, the repetitiveness of your hand drawing the lines helps it to stick in your head better. This trick was especially useful when I was in high school and could be drawing dressage tests when I was supposed to be paying attention in class.

what ive done before is cut out letters and put them around in a room in my house and pretend its the ring. then go over the test over and over again

If you notice in the test, you usually do a series of movements in one direction, then change rein and do the same series of movements in a mirror image in the opposite direction. So, you really only need to remember the first set, where to change rein, and then do the mirror set.

Whenever I had a dressage test, I would take a piece of paper and draw a rectangle (an arena) on it with the letters labelled. I would then take my test and a pen and draw it out using different types of lines for different paces. There used to be a website in which you could "ride" your dressage test, however I cannot find the link (and it’s been years since I’ve used the link).

If the horse is yours, have a friend come with you and have your friend read out the test while you practice.

The trick is continually repeat it over and over and over. Even watching some other riders ride the test at the show may help you with your memorization. If it is a schooling show, they may allow you to have a reader.

Set up a small arena in you house or in your yard and run through the test on foot. I usually memorize them that way.

Draw or act it out
Repeat repeat repeat!
Once you get there, watch the other people doing that test- it helps to actually SEE it in action.

-Its perfectly possible. Half the time I get to the show and have only GLANCED at my test. I just watch the people before me. And I really cram while Im tacking up…..and warming up.

most dresage tests go the movemtn one way, and then the other, so you really nly need to learn half a test. try drawing it out on a page, or mark out an arena and physically paace the test/

If you have an old bedsheet or something of the like, mark out the dressage letters at appropriate places around the sheet, then practice trotting and cantering (if its a canter test),ect, your test around it. It helps trust me!
