In Novice level Eventing Is a Shadbelly coat appropriate for your Dressage phase?
I’ve done hunter/ jumpers for years, But I’m just starting to do events. I am planning to do Novice level this year. I was wondering if I’m allowed to wear a Shadbelly coat at this level for my dressage? I’ve herd conflicting answers . If not what level do they allow them?
Also I was wondering, for my Hunter I wear a Green plaid Hunt coat, is this acceptable for my Show Jumping phase? Or dose it have to be Black?
Thanks a lot!
No, a shadbelly is only appropriate at Intermediate or Advanced Level.
You are not judged on turnout in the show jumping phase, so by the rules you can wear pretty much what you want. However, a green coat would stand out. Most people use their (short) black coat from dressage again.

it depends on what level you do for jumping- hunter green is fine in smaller show but once you get bigger I’d get one in nave or black. They are surefire colors for almost every level. And as for dressage- sorry I can’t help you there…

Shadbellies are only worn at the highest levels of eventing. I’m not sure, but maybe like 2 or 3 star and up. You need a black or navy blue regular dressage coat. These look just like hunter coats only they only have one slit in the back and are longer. Your hunter coat should be fine for the show jumping phase, although if you move up to higher levels, you might want to get a navy blue one.

I personally wouldn’t take the chance on a green plaid coat maybe a navy blue or black. I think a Shadbelly would be fine!

no wearing a shadbelly in lower levels is very disrespectful. You should buy just a regular dressage coat. Wearing a shadbelly is a privlage and i think you get to wear it starting at 4th level. If you are going to a mini event you can wear the same thing for all of the phases except cross country where you need a safety vest. If you are doing a rated event green is probably still fine. Its not the most popular of colors just like it isn’t in the hunter ring but it is still acceptable. I would reccomend buying a used navy hunt coat and black dressage coat ( has 4 buttons, hunt coats have 3) and you will be set and wont have to spend alot of money.
Good luck

No, you can NOT wear a shadbelly until Intermediate and Advanced. Anything with tails is not permitted in the lower levels. You can wear a dark color or tweed, a helmet in dark blue or black, shirt in white or a light color, with stock tie/pin, choker or tie, gloves of a dark color, tan, beige, or white, britches of a light color or white, and boots of black, brown, field or regular tall. Half-chaps and/or chaps are NOT allowed.
For show jumping the green plaid might work, as long as it is very dark. It says dark color or tweed for Novice through Prelim.
I’m reading this directly from the 2008 USEA Rulebook, so unless it’s changed for 2009, which I very much doubt it has, those are the rules.

I’m not sure if the rules strictly forbid it, but a shadbelly would not be appropriate for novice eventing. Your green plaid hunter coat would be more appropriate. You can wear any conservative colored jacket you want, as long as you are not wearing white breeches. With white breeches you wear a black jacket but you can also wear tan breeches with a dark colored jacket other than black.
Read the "dress" sections of the USEA rule book.
