if they ban horse slaughter why do some people ship horses to mexico and stuff?
Ig congress just banned horse slaughter in the US, and the last plant was shut down in 2007, why are they still transporting horses to Mexico and other countries to be slaughtered? Or that’s just underground now?
As has been said, the USA might have passed laws to close horse slaughter but other countries have not. By closing abattoirs dealing with horses the US government has condemned horses to hours of travel and stress ending up with a nasty death.
jo d has quoted from Save a Horse now but, what is stated is not true – there are many unwanted horses, to many being bred by people who have a mare and a friend has a stallion with no thought to how much a foal will cost in money and time.
Rather than banning slaughter of horses into the meat chain what should be done is to encourage all abattoirs to open their doors for a day a month to horses – with stricter regulations on how these animals are dealt with.
Banning has not stopped the slaughter just added more stress, so admit it was wrong and tighten the laws so it is humane and make sure that the law is adhered to.

Hi,
Over the past eight years there have been many different bills trying to stop horse slaughter, the majority of them get stuck in committee. The differing bills all have one theme, stopping horse slaughter.
There is now a transport bill, also stuck in committee, that is trying to ban interstate transport of horses. This would effectively shut the borders to Canada and Mexico, where our American horses routinely go for slaughter.
There are 9 million horses in the USA and 100,000 each year are sent to slaughter, usually via the livestock auction route.
The plants in TX and Illinois were closed down due to local law issues and sanitation concerns. Horse slaughter is a vile, horrific ending to a magnificent animals life. There are NO unwanted horses, no one has a litter of horses shoe up on their doorstep, most horses are intentionally bred were wanted at one time.
Thanks for your question!

The simpliest answer to your question is that horse slaughter has NOT been banned in the US. Sadly we continue to see sloppy reporters and horse slaughter advocates telling everyone it has been banned. We have yet to pass a federal bill to ban horse slaughter. Some states have banned it which led to the closing of the last three pants – two in Texas and one in Illinois. The goal and urgency of the federal bill remains the same as it did the first day it was introduced. Without a federal bill this foreign driven industry will continue to operate as it always has. They are now shipping horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter. With the federal bill this too will stop.
Please visit http://www.awionline.org/horseslaughter to learn more and take action in the Animal Welfare Institute’s campaign to end horse slaughter. AWI has been leading this effort since 2001 and won’t stop until the federal bill is enacted.
