I have a 2 year old, 16 hand Tenn. Walker, he has been broke to ride for about 6 months now. \
He like to climb on lots of stuff. He has climbed at least 4 rails high on the gate, puts his front feet on top of the tire hub cover things on the trailer and any other sturdy thing he can find. He also like to paw and if he is tied to the trailer or in a stall with a hay bag he will paw at it and get his foot stuck in it. He will then just stand there, look and me and wait for me to get his foot unstuck. So any Ideas about what I could do.
He is gelded and lives in a field with electric fencing. There is only the one gate (to exit and enter the feild). I feed him hay on the ground, I only use a hay bag when at a show or on a trail ride. He gets attention each day.
It sounds like your horse is just being badly behaved. You need to start disciplining him. Working on ground manners and even teaching him showmanship will help him respect you. When he starts pawing, this is a sign of impatience, you need to smack him on the shoulder and tell him no in a firm voice.
Your horse may be acting out because he is not getting enough regular handleing and exersize aswell. Try longeing him regularly, and when you ride him make sure that you are being the leader and discipline him.
He could also be acting like he is a stallion still (or if he still is a stallion, getting him gelded may help).
Another suggestion I have is to remove the hay bag from his stall, and put his hay on the ground. having a hay bag in a horses stall, esp. one with this problem is very dangerous. if you arn’t there one day to help him get his foot out he could get panicked and end up with a broken leg or other injury.

he is developing attention getting habits that could risk his safety. tie him to the trailer and stand back and wait for him to exhibit a habit that is bad for him. you have three seconds to correct him, recommend a buggy or longe whip. the first time he does climb whack him lightly but with authority, the second time he climbs whack him more severely than the first time and if he does it more strongly than the first two times. also try tying him other places where he does climb and repeat the above process. one other thing when tied to the trailer tie him at head and only about 18” of extra lead rope. you will need to lengthen this when you want to feed and water but stay with him getting a foot stuck in a hay bag or something else could really hurt him!

He is still a youngster, and is learning ways to get your attention very quiclky. Firstly don’t tie him up near anything that he can paw, such as feed sacks, as this could cause an accident. If there is nothing in reach he can paw, he can’t use that to get your attention. Even if he starts pawing the ground, ignore him completely, pay loads of attention to another horse if you can, and eventually he should stop pawing the ground. As soon as he does stop go over and praise him loads. His climbing is an unusual trait, but it may be something he will grow out of because he is so young. Again when he climbs on something, as long as it is safe to do so ignore him. You may want to use electric fencing to discourage him from climbing gates because this could potentially be very dangerous. Good luck
