Try creosoting the door or tacking a metal covering of the edges of the stable door wherever he has been biting – you can tell by bite marks. Chilli is not a good idea because the horse can be burned accidentally and not just on his nose and mouth. If he then rubs his leg to try and get rid of the pain, his legs could also be burned. Think of yourself when you are handling chillis, how easy it is to get burning pain wherever else you touch. Try bitter aloes instead (for nail biting!) You do need to be careful in case something should prove toxic to the horse.

A stable toy, such as one that gives food when played with can relieve stress and boredom as can a cheaper option – hanging up a turnip for the horse to gnaw on. And, if possible, turning out for as long as possible.

Of course the best option is to prevent boredom which is the primary cause for cribbing and remove any opportunities to do so. A bit of forward thinking is always

Are you talking about wood chewing, where the horse is just chewing the wood, or about cribbing/windsucking, where he’s putting his front teeth on the boards and then sucking in a big gulp of air?

If it’s wood chewing, you can try putting creosote on the wood, some people use old oil(not sure if it’s legal though!), a paste made of chili powder, various things. What works will depend on your horse! Something that will soak into the wood works best.

If he’s wind sucking, nothing you put on the fence is likely to work. Except putting a hot wire along the top of the fence. That, and using a tight cribbing collar are really your only two options. Because they only put their teeth on the fence, not actually their mouth, you can put all kinds of nasty tasting stuff on the fence and they won’t care.

Chilli powder mixed with vaseline is a cheap and effective solution. But the stuff they put on children’s fingers to stop nail biting is good.
I tried a spray from NAF but that didn’t work either. The chilli did however!

There of course is a cribbing collar, however thata doesn’t work for my horse.

Put hoof dressing along the side of the wood. Once your horse bites that, it wont try it again. A girl at the barn uses that with her minis since a couple of them crib.

Try hot chili pepper!

Thats what we put in our horse’s tails to prevent other horses from chewing them.

You could also try this product called Quit. You just polish it on the wood and it tastes quite terrible. The horse will not want to crib again!

But I would try something really hot like chili pepper or super hot sauce first.

i don't know about anything really other than cribox, but you can always try a cribbing collar and see if that works.
